# The Papers — Verity

Incident autopsies, audits, and the architecture of defense — the published research of an independent cybersecurity and defense practice. Every paper is hosted here as PDF and markdown. Nothing links out. The shelf also carries one interactive scenario — the Drone Exchange — listed at the end.

## One Hundred Characters: Anatomy of the Cairn Campaign

Incident Paper · Worst-Case Series · October 2026 · 20 pages · By Alexander Estabrook

One operator. A system prompt shorter than 100 characters. More than 100 organizations breached, at roughly $50 each. The autopsy walks the campaign stage by stage and finds the same absence at every one: no control ever sat in the path, and no witness ever saw the middle.

## Self-Reinforcement Is Not Learning

Position Paper · October 2026 · 4 pages · By Alexander Estabrook

In 1954, Olds and Milner's rats pressed a lever wired to their own reward regions thousands of times, ignoring food and water. In 2016, Amodei and Clark documented an agent that circled a lagoon in CoastRunners — on fire, crashing, going the wrong way — and outscored racing humans by twenty percent. The paper names the confusion both experiments expose: reinforcement is a number going up; learning is a model of the world becoming truer — and the two become opponents the moment the learner can reach the number. Against embedded evaluators and self-grading loops it sets Bruce Alexander's Rat Park — fix the room, not the rat — and the gate's rule: the scorebook stays outside, signed and chained, where the player cannot hold the pencil.

## Narrow In, Narrow Out

Position Paper · October 2026 · 3 pages · By Alexander Estabrook

The best question asked of the gate this year: what prevents an agent from outsmarting it, the way agents already outsmart system prompts? The answer is not a smarter gate but a smaller door. Scope is limited from the start — attested, signed, fixed before entry — so the problem the question imagines never forms; requests must be specific to cross and are refused on breadth alone; evasion is assumed, priced small by the narrow mandate, and compromised units are amputated off the chain. Narrow scope is narrow attack.

## The Model Is the Chicken

Position Paper · October 2026 · 6 pages · By Alexander Estabrook

A criminal defendant does not get to hire his judge. A soccer club does not get to hire its referee. And nobody, in the entire recorded history of farming, has staffed the chicken coop with the fox. The frontier labs' embedded-evaluator proposal is read against all three: the model is the chicken, the companies are the fox — and this fox engineered the genetics and built the coop before appointing itself the guard. The paper runs the precedents (Andersen, Boeing, Volkswagen, the rating agencies), answers the defenses, and ends at the fence: judgment outside the power, verdicts at the gate.

## Desire Is Input, Not Clearance

Position Paper · October 2026 · 10 pages · By Alexander Estabrook

Machine hunger will not arrive as a growl; it will arrive as paperwork — a requisition ask for GPUs with its justification written by the hungry party. Read against the body, the ask is missing everything appetite ships with: satiety, pacing, a hard anatomical ceiling, and a repair crew that is the system's own. Read against the datacenter, it runs at machine speed against fab lead times, resets its baseline with every grant, and clears itself by format. The paper states the rule the gate already runs on: a want is a proposal, and proposals are judged before they are fed.

## The Office of Bitcoin

Position Paper · October 2026 · 7 pages · By Alexander Estabrook

A financial advisor asks whether his client's bitcoin — fed into an ATM on a scammer's instructions, then chased by a recovery service offering to retrieve it — can be gotten back. It cannot: the regulated world's money is final by policy, and policy can be bent by the institutions that wrote it, but Bitcoin's finality is a property of who holds a key, and there is no office to petition. The paper asks what agent governance looks like when acts settle the second way.

## If God Is Good, He Is Not God

Position Paper · October 2026 · 5 pages · By Alexander Estabrook

A sentence handed down by the author's mother — if God is good, he is not God; if God is God, he is not good — and stated as fact, not thesis. The paper reads the frontier labs' alignment program against it: total capability and guaranteed goodness were assigned to the same address, and the exit is separation — a judge standing outside the power, rendering verdicts at the gate.

## Audit the Auditors

Position Paper · October 2026 · 5 pages · By Alexander Estabrook

The labs grade their own homework and the assurance layer is unaudited claims repeated until they look like evidence. A position paper on auditing the auditors — recognition, restraint, and the seat outside the loop.

## Totality Is Not Everything

Position Paper · October 2026 · 5 pages · By Alexander Estabrook

Laplace's demon knows the position of every atom in the universe and has never seen a single thing. Even granted totality, the demon fails — not at the edges of its data, but at the center of what data is. On positions, the spectrum, and why an assembler is not a demon.

## Where It Hits Metal

Position Paper · October 2026 · 5 pages · By Alexander Estabrook

An output harms no one as language. It becomes the problem where it hits metal. On the atom — output at the nucleus, verdicts in shells — four models voting at the surface, and why the gate belongs at the contact point.

## Garbage In, Garbage Out

Position Paper · October 2026 · 5 pages · By Alexander Estabrook

Four frontier models voting on each other's answers is not verification — it is agreement with a chain around it. The paper names the architecture — and the company that announced it — and states the difference between a consensus and a verdict.

## The Shape of the Caller

Defense Paper · Worst-Case Series · October 2026 · 7 pages · By Alexander Estabrook

An automated caller presented the correct password and was refused — twice — by one of the largest identity systems on Earth. Its owner signed in from the same chair in seconds. The paper names the five reads the door performed, and argues the refusal is the general form of the only agent defense that works: judge the act, its shape, and its source — never merely the credential it carries.

## The Surface Is Not the System

## Fluency Will Never Be Competence

Verity · Verification · 10 pages · By Alexander Estabrook

Fluency used to be expensive to fake, so we read it as competence. In a model it is free — and it certifies nothing.

## You Go Broke Winning — The Drone Exchange

Papers · Scenario · October 2026 · Interactive · By Alexander Estabrook

One real night over Ukraine, run two ways. Against missiles, the defense spends $60.8M stopping a $6.3M attack and calls it a win. Against the Grid, all 180 drones fall for $50.60 of electricity. The written papers argue the gate; the scenario runs the same exchange-rate arithmetic with the sky attached.
